A lot of cars are stolen each year. More often than not, people fail to take the necessary precaution. Here are some of the tips that can make your car theft-proof. 1. Do not forget to take your keys with you when you leave your car. About 20% of stolen cars still have keys on the ignition when the vehicle was stolen. 2. Consider also to lock your cars when you leave. Almost half of the stolen vehicles were unlocked when left by the owners. 3. Do not hide your keys inside the car or worse, do not hide another set of keys in the car. Thieves can easily find the keys in the car especially if they have a lot of time looking for it. 4. Consider parking in areas with adequate light. A lot of cars get stolen at night especially if the cars are parked in dark streets or alley. 5. Choose to park your cars in attended or secured lots. It will be harder for thieves to steal your car if somebody is watching on it. 6. Make sure that your keys for the car door are different from those for your trunk and glove compartment. Change the locks if both your trunk and car doors utilize the same key. This is useful if your car is in attended parking areas, as you only need to leave the door and ignition keys to the attendant. This way, the attendant will not have easy access to your glove compartment and your trunk. When you pick up your car from the parking area, check if the battery, tires and spare tires are in the same exact condition when you left them. 7. Do not leave the car running even if you will be away for a minute. Cars usually get stolen in gas stations, ATM machines and convenience stores because owners leave them running while becoming busy with something else. A lot of the vehicles also leave their cars running in their driveways or during their routine engine warm up. Be careful when doing this; otherwise, your car will zoom off courtesy of car thieves. 8. Make sure that the car windows are closed completely when you park. A partially opened window makes it easier for the car thieves to open the doors. 9. As much as possible, do not leave any valuables in your car. If you must, keep them where they cannot be seen from the outside. Your car will not be a victim of car theft if the thieves do not see anything valuable inside it. 10. Consider using the emergency brake when you park. Aside from safety reasons, the car will be harder to tow. 11. Consider building a garage or if you already have one, use it. A lot of people do not use their garage because they are always in a hurry, and parking in the garage takes a lot of time. However, leaving the car outside the garage makes it vulnerable to thieves. 12. Lock your garage doors and your car. You will give thieves a hard time opening both doors. 13. It is wise not to leave your registration and any other important documents in your car. People who steal your car might use these documents to sell or resell your car. Important documents can be left at home while your registration can be kept in your wallet. 14. Consider using VIN or vehicle identification number. It is easier to track a stolen car when the identification number is etched in your car. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Taking care of your vehicle does not end with keeping it squeaky clean; but moreover, with keeping it safe. |
